Absorption trenches or beds

Absorption trenches or beds are the most common effluent disposal method. Treated wastewater is distributed through perforated pipes laid in gravel-filled trenches or beds, allowing it to slowly soak into the surrounding soil. The soil naturally filters and treats the effluent before it reaches groundwater.

Wick Trenches

Wick trenches are designed for sites with challenging soil conditions or limited space. They are similar to an absorption trench but are a better choice for soil with low permeability, e.g. clay. They use ledged trenches and rock to wick wastewater upwards from the trench and disperse evenly through evapotranspiration. 

Wisconsin (Raised Mound) Systems

Wisconsin, or raised mound systems, are used when natural soil conditions prevent conventional subsurface disposal. A specially constructed mound of sand and soil is built above ground level, and treated effluent is distributed throughout the mound where it is filtered and treated before entering the underlying soil.

ETA trenches or beds

ETA (Evapotranspiration-Absorption) trenches or beds combine evaporation, plant uptake, and soil absorption to manage treated effluent. These systems are designed to maximise moisture removal through natural processes and are often used in areas with suitable climate and site conditions.

Subsurface Irrigation (Dripline)

Subsurface irrigation systems use a network of dripline pipes installed below the surface to distribute treated effluent evenly across a designated area. The effluent provides moisture and nutrients to plants while being safely treated by the soil, making this an efficient and environmentally friendly disposal method.
